Little Johnny Brown - African American Ring Game

Picture
Related Concepts: Tempo, Movement improvisation and imitation, individual/group interplay

Activity

Leader sings the song and demonstrates the sequence as follows:

“Little Johnny Brown, lay your comfort (or blanket) down”--Strut into the circle and lay out a scarf or handkerchief (square is best) in the middle of the circle.

“Fold up the corner, Johnny Brown” --Fold each corner precisely on the syllable “corn.”

“Show us the motion, Johnny Brown”--Pick up the scarf and make a clear, repetitive motion.

(Later, make sure that the group does not copy while singing this phrase.)

“We can do the motion, Johnny Brown”--The whole group imitates the motion.

“Take it to your friend now, Johnny Brown”--Strut over to someone else and hand over the scarf. That person now goes into the center and the whole song starts again.

Continue playing until everyone has had a turn. If the group is too big, there can be several Johnny Browns (each with a handkerchief) going in the center at once, with the remaining people in the circle choosing whose motion they want to copy.

O Mochi

Picture
A game about making rice cakes. At first we thought this was about putting them in and out of an oven, but after some research, we have found out that the game is about two people preparing mochi (rice cakes) using a Japanese usu (mortar) and kine (pestle). A careful timing of the swinging of the pestle and the turning of the cooked rice is needed to prevent injury! The actions of the game imitate this dangerous baking task! Here are the words below (we do not know about the spelling though - it is phonetic only:

O Mochi O suki macho, O mochi o suki macho / Petan Koh petan koh petan petan petan koh / tsut konote tsut konote konote konote / do do do mi so so so mi do mi so mi do mi so

Please feel free to correct us if you know the correct words or spelling!!

Poco le' me 'lone and the Limbo

Picture
The Limbo is a popular musical game that originated in Trinidad in the Carribean. The game started as a simple dance where people moved their bodies in different ways under a bar or string, but over time the dance changed into a game that was played at parties and social gatherings... just as it is today in many other cultures around the World. We decided to play the game to a folk song from Trinidad called 'Poco le' me 'lone' which means "Poco, leave me alone" in the Trinidadian dialect. Listen and sing along to the song by clicking on the audio link below.
